National Diabetes Awareness Week

National Diabetes Week is an annual week to raise awareness of diabetes. It is a seriousness illness that can have significant complications. Controlling diabetes requires medical management as well as a review of lifestyle habits. People often think only people who are overweight or elderly can develop diabetes, but the truth is this disease can affect anyone.

Here are four facts to start the diabetes discussion.

  1. One in three Australian adults will develop diabetes in their lifetime.
  2. Over 1.7 million Australians are living with diabetes and a further 280 develop diabetes every day.
  3. Diabetes is the fastest growing chronic disease and will become our most widespread chronic disease within the next five years.
  4. 2 million Australians are at high risk of type 2 diabetes.
